The internet has made it easier than ever before to communicate efficiently with team members. But simply sending emails is no longer the mark of a "high-touch" communicator. There are several technologies that can you can use to improve your effectiveness in this area.
-Blogging is no longer on the fringe – it's blatantly mainstream.
-"A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled web log) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally in reverse chronological order).
-Although most early weblogs were manually updated, tools to automate the maintenance of such sites made them accessible to a much larger population, and the use of some sort of browser-based software is now a typical aspect of ""blogging""."
-Over time, blogs have become more sophisticated and easier to use
-Some blogging software allows you to include pictures and videos in addition to text.

-When you are leading or involved in a number of different projects simultaneously, it can be easy to accumulate an unmanageable number of email addresses.
-Fortunately, life can be brought back under control using IMAP-based email management software that collects all messages in a single location.

-Emailers used to tolerate typing in the names of each recipient for every email. We've since gotten lazy (or smart!) with the advent of the "group email list."
-Group email lists allow you to send emails to multiple email addresses by writing sending an email to a single address.
-For example, sending an email to: Yankees@googlegroups.com will send an email to all members of the Yankee MLB fan group

-Instant messaging, called "IM" for short refers to a live or "instant" text communication between two internet users using "Screen Name" aliases.
-Instant messages are completely private conversations initiated when one user attempts to contact the other.
-The most common service used for instant messaging amongst my peers is called AOL Instant Messenger or "AIM" for short.

-Text messages are short messages (~160 characters) generally sent from one cellular telephone to another cellular telephone.
-Typically a certain number of messages are included in a subscriber's monthly plan. Otherwise, they may cost an additional ~5-10 cents per message.
-Because cell phones do not have full alphanumeric keyboards, text messaging is achieved by pressing combinations of number digits to achieve the desired combination of letters.
-Over time, phone manufacturers have figured out ways to program cell phones to predict what words users are trying to type before they have been completely spelled out. The industry standard for this predictive software is called "T9" ("Text on Nine Keys"). With some practice, it can drastically reduce the amount of time it takes a user to send a lengthy text message (visit: www.T9.com)
-It is worth noting that Blackberry and Personal Digital Assistant users (i.e., Palm Pilot, Treo, etc.) use email more commonly than cell phones users because:
-a) Their devices are able to process and display more complex information
-b) They offer full alphanumeric keyboards and
-c) Emails are viewed a being more professionally acceptable

-"Voice over Internet Protocol [VOIP] is the technology used to transmit voice conversations over a data network using the Internet Protocol. Such data network may be the Internet or a corporate Intranet." Basically, it's a free telephone within your computer.
-Online telephony is probably my favorite web feature of the past few years because it is so clearly on the verge of redefining the telephone industry to the benefit of the consumer.
-In addition to regular telephony most services (i.e. Skype) allow you to use video conferencing, text chat as well as collaborative workspaces where you can upload documents, spreadsheets, images and draw on virtual whiteboards.

-"YouTube is an [insanely] popular free video sharing website which lets users upload, view, and share video clips. Videos can be rated, and the average rating and the number of times a video has been watched are both published."
-As of 2006, users were watching about 100 million clips a day on the site. I can't say for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that number has risen meaningfully since.
-Probably the three most important things to know about YouTube from a "leadership perspective" are that
-a) It can be intelligently leveraged to promote a cause or person to the world at large. We're talking big league, free exposure for anyone with the creativity and talent to post interesting content
-b) The site was purchased by Google for $1.65 billion in cash and stock and
-c) There are serious questions about YouTube's responsibility (and ability) to prevent users from illegally posting copyrighted content on the site.
